[L-USA] stamp question

From: Randy Hall (randy@mapsurfer.com) | Date: 1999-01-03 20:21:05 UTC-04:00
I'm curious what people are carving stamps from. Erik of VT sent
me FACTIS plastic erasers, which are about 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches.
These seem to work pretty good, but I am looking for something
bigger, because I have no real intricate carving skills. Anyone
using anything bigger?

Thx
Randy

When I carve my own stamps I usually use Staedtler erasers - either the
regular size of the Mars Grand. I've also recently started using Uncle
Walter's carving block which comes in 2x2 blocks and larger and is quite
thick. Speaking of Uncle Walter's...one of our very own letterboxing
members had her artwork using UW's block in the latest issue of
Rubberstampmadness! Go Sheila!!

There are several other brands of carving material that I have yet to
try - Soft-Kut, EZ Cut...hrm, I know there are more! Check out the
Carving Consortium website the link to which is found on the L-USA
website.

I'm using Speedball carving medium that comes in 4"x6" sheets. It can be
fairly "crumbly", but it seems to work OK.

Hi Randy--

It's true, when it comes to carving--size DOES matter!

I've carved up all kinds of bigger things--and finally found Nasco EZ Cut
which comes in huge sheets (like 24" x 36" or something).

At MacFrugals and some of the Dollar Stores there are big erasers. There
are lovely white ones in a cardboard sleeve that are nearly an inch thick
and there are skinny pink ones that say clever things like "For Big
Misteaks"--they all work, but have differing degrees of crumbliness, etc.

If you're really getting into the carving or enjoy catalogs of art
supplies, you might want to call Nasco to send you one of theirs. Here's
the #--1-800-558-9595.

Good luck!

Julie

Hi Julie
Can you find out when you go to your store if they have a British outlet for this Nasco EZ Cut we are having problems finding erasers in general over here if we are cutting we tend to stick several erasers together.

Hi Adrian--

I called Nasco and they DO ship overseas. To call for a free catalog (and
it's a big fat one) you would need to use their direct line 920-563-2446 OR
you can fax your request to 920-563-8296. Hope that helps!

I would like to know if anyone has a site online with stamps so newbies can
see what kinds of craving are on the art stamps. Inspiration you know ! I
would also like to know what tools are used for craving?

TIA

Hi there! If you go to the Letterboxing.org site you will find a
carving tutorial and stamp images carved by Der Mad Stamper. There is
also an excellent FAQ there that is a must-read for all newbies. Good
Luck, Funhog

Silent Doug's Site,

www.letterboxing.info

has examples of his stamps for his letterboxes. It is considered an
excellent source of letterboxing information.
